Alvaro Ilizarbe (aka Freegums) is a Peruvian artist based in Miami. Using acrylic on amorphous pieces of wood, Ilizarbe creates tonal, highly patterned works that possess an interesting energy due to the looseness of his lines. While his paintings are great on their own, Ilizarbe’s exhibitions are truly next-level. Photographing the patterns in his work, Ilizarbe then creates wallpaper which he affixes to exhibition spaces- the outcome is this bizarre illusion-like setting where his work is practically camouflaged against the wallpaper.
